FAQ: H3000 32-Bit vs. 16-Bit  Hardware Compatibility

In January of 1998 JDS MICROPROCESSING introduced a new 32-Bit Backplane Motherboard system for the HYDRA 3000.

This document attempts to explain the compatibility issues of option modules between the two platforms.

Currently, Async, LAN, Master Processor, and Channel Boards from 68030 32-Bit units can be interchanged with boards from older 68010 16-Bit units. However, before the board can be swapped it needs to be re-jumpered first. (see jumpering procedure below)

Due to engineering limitations of the new backplane motherboard, option modules from older 68010 16-Bit units may not be installed into the newer 32-bit systems because they lack the board compatibility circuitry to operate in 32-bit mode. JDS MICROPROCESSING has made a trade-in program where customers may upgrade their older units to the newer 32-bit platform.
